Board Meeting Minutes

Minutes of the November 23 and 24, 2002 Meeting

Minutes of the September 25, 2002 Meeting

Minutes of the November 18, 2001 Meeting

1) Minutes of the November 23, 2002 Board of Directors meeting of the Central Valley Bird Club held at the lobby of the Radison Hotel during the Central Valley Birding Symposium in Stockton CA.

Present: President Leo Edson, Vice President Joan Humphrey, Treasurer David Yee, Secretary Waldo Holt, Director John Sterling.

Absent: Directors Jon King, Kevin Hunting.

Also Present: Bev Brock, John Fulton

Leo opened the meeting at 4:40 pm. There were no minutes of the previous meeting as Waldo had left the minutes of the September 25th meeting at home.

Leo went over the Board of Directors nominations for the next day's general membership meeting. Waldo and Kevin will be going off of the board. Joan will take over as secretary. John Sterling will take over the V.P. position. Bev Brock and John Fulton will become new members-at-large.

David reported that membership before the Symposium was at about 450 and that there was about 150 new members from the Symposium.

David said that Tim Manolis will have brief comments at the general membership meeting regarding the Bulletin and the David Tinker will have comments regarding the scholarship fund.

A discussion of some possible fieldtrip events in the coming year followed. Bev floated the possibility of something in the Fresno area. She wondered if since this is the "Central Valley" Bird Club, was it necessary that a field trip be confined to the Central Valley exclusively? Could we go up into the mountains? John Sterling said that if a trip were to start in the mountains but wound up at, say the Fresno Sewer Ponds, then that qualifies as a "Central Valley" excursion. Bev thought the third week in May might be good. John Fulton suggested a fall shorebird event. David pointed out that one of the reasons that the Davis Wetlands trip had a good turn out was because Jon King for weeks prior was consistently reporting birds of interest from there.

Adjourn at 5:15.
Next meeting is November 24 general membership meeting.

Leo opened the meeting at 1:05 pm.

1) Leo explained the nominations for new officers and directors. Waldo and Kevin will be going off of the board. Joan will take over as secretary. John Sterling will take over the V.P. position. Bev Brock and John Fulton will become new members-at-large. Leo thanked Waldo and Kevin for their service and was enthusiastic about Bev and Fulton. Leo entertained a motion to approve the new members and the changes of office (MSP Blades/Turnbull).

2) Tim apologized that the Fall issue of the Bulletin was late. He reported that over the past year the Bulletin had improved, being larger with color photos. Tim said that there is always a need for material and for input from new people.

3) David Tinker said that the Scholarship Committee will consider many questions in the coming year: Where to send qualified students? Who qualifies? How does one qualify? Might there be levels of qualification? How large a factor is financial need? He said that these questions might best be addressed by the having a variety of options.

4)David announced that the Yucatan field trip will be in January 2004.

5) Leo announced that field trips in 2003 will likely include: trips to the northern Central Valley in February, Fresno in May, and Merced in September.

Minutes submitted by Waldo Holt

1) Minutes of the September 25, 2002 Board of Directors meeting of the
Central Valley Bird Club held at the home of David and Sue Yee near Lodi
CA.

Present: President Leo Edson, Vice President Joan Humphrey, Treasurer
David Yee, Secretary Waldo Holt, Director Jon King.

Absent: Directors John Sterling, Kevin Hunting.

Also Present: Kurt Mize, Cheri Pilsbury

Leo opened the meeting at 1912 hours. The Minutes of the August 10, 2002
meeting were accepted (MSP Edson/Yee).

Leo presented the results of the nominating committee suggestions for
officers to be voted on at the general membership meeting in November.
The consensus of the board was agreeable to this slate:

John Fulton ù new term (expires 2005)
Bev Brock ù new term (expires 2005)
Leo Edson (Pres.) ù (expires 2003)
Joan Humphrey (Sec.) ù take over Waldo's term (expires 2004)
David Yee (Treas.) ù (expires 2003)
Jon King ù (expires 2003)
John Sterling ù replaces Joan as V.P. (expires 2004)

David reported that the proposed trip to Yucatan is to be postponed for
one year. Trip leaders David, Keith Hansen are set for 4th week in
January 2004. Ten day trip at $2300 with $300 going to CVBC. Leaders are
covered under current CVBC insurance plan (same insurer as WFO). David
asked that the board vote in an acknowledgment of the fact that the trip
leaders are considered to be covered for liability under the CVBC
insurance (MSP Holt/Edson). If trip is successful then maybe do others:
Cuba? Majorca?

David relays that Tim Manolis is thankful for the help he received (from
Jon, John, Leo) in getting out latest issue of Bulletin. He will try to
maintain 20 page format.

Leo reports that he does not have the time to coordinate a C.V. survey of
Bald Eagles this winter.

David reports that 75 people have already registered for the symposium.
This is better than last year so he is optimistic. No speakers have
backed out. CVBS Committee is doing very good.

David reports that the scholarship fund committee has been formed: Steve
Stocking (Stockton) coordinator, Elysia Regosa (Fresno), David Tinker
(Corning), Rich Riener (Chico), and David. David will get a letter to Leo
to make announcement at Symposium.

Leo reports that Joel Marion's computer has been fixed and therefore, the
CVBC website will be updated soon.

Leo thinks a club brochure is a good idea. Joan says that the previous
brochure which had formerly been considered "lost" has now been found.
She says she will work with Frances Oliver and spit one out by the
Symposium.

Leo would like to have fieldtrips both north and south in the coming
year.

Adjourned at 2036. Next meeting at symposium.
