CVBC’s Fall Birding Event and General/Board in Merced County

September 6 and 7, 2003

Please join the bird club in Merced County for a weekend of birding and presentations. Along with what should be some excellent birding we are fortunate to have two presenters at this event who are regional experts in their fields. Bob Allen is a biologist for California Department of Fish and Game who has worked on game and non-game bird studies in Merced County since the mid 1990's. He previously was at PRBO, Humboldt State and is originally from New York. Bob Edminster is professor and dean emeritus from Merced College. He has a wealth of information about geology, native plants, and the distribution of wildlife habitats of the Central Valley. He has seen the Valley change considerably since the 1930's and can provide glimpses of his insights he earned with decades of experience.

Birding the Yucatan Peninsula
and Isla Cozumel, 24 January to 1 February, 2004

The CVBC is sponsoring a trip to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in January 2004. The cost will be about $2,300, a portion of which will go to the CVBC Scholarship Fund. The leaders will be David Yee and Keith Hansen. The itinerary will include visits to a botanical garden, mangrove wetlands, and the largest freshwater lake in the Yucatan. While birds will be emphasized, we will not ignore the fascinating Mayan ruins and will visit renowned sites at Tulum and Chichen-Itza. Yucatan specialties such as Mexican Sheartail, Yucatan Wren, Yucatan Bobwhite, Yucatan Jay, and Orange Oriole will all be expected. On the north coast we expect to find a stunning number of American Flamingos. The trip will conclude with a visit to Cozumel Island where we can expect at least 3 island endemic species and many distinctive races (or species?) of many other birds. For more information and itinerary, contact David Yee at 209-365-1526 or e-mail him at davidyeeatlycnet.com
